The European Union’s ambitious plan to deploy 300 GW of offshore wind energy by 2050 will continue through the InterOPERA project, an initiative under the EU’s “Horizon Europe” funding scheme.
Launched with a kick-off meeting in Lyon, France, InterOPERA unites over 20 European partners in a four-year venture to establish interoperability standards for electricity grids.
Focused on multi-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids as the optimal means of transmitting offshore wind-generated electricity, the project aims to ensure compatibility among HVDC systems and components from various suppliers.
This comprehensive approach not only enhances the integration of renewables into the electricity system but also fosters market security and resilience, by the development and implementation of a real-time physical demonstrator. InterOPERA plans to extend its developed frameworks into operational tools, providing widespread access to European stakeholders.
